Abstract

Allah Almighty sometimes reveals things from the hands of the Prophets which are out of the ordinary. For example, Moses' bright hand, his staff that turned into a snake, and many other miracles. On the other hand, in this universe, Allah Almighty keeps appearing such events which are not the miracle of any prophet, nor has anyone demanded it from the prophet or messenger. For example, Solar eclipse is a great sign of Allah, but it is not a miracle of any prophet, nor was it done at the request of anyone. These are signs amongst the signs of Allah, whose expedience He knows best. The moon was split up into two parts during the life of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). It is generally accepted by all, but the difference is whether this miracle was bestowed on the Holy Prophet in response to the demand of the infidels, or whether the moon was split without their request. The general tendency of the Mufassereen is that the disbelievers had asked the Holy Prophet to split the moon, in response to which the Holy Prophet was given this miracle. The famous scholars of the subcontinent, Maulana Amin Ahsan Islahi and Syed Abul Ali Maududi are among the second opinion holders. They opine that in the era of the Holy Prophet (saw) the moon was split, but this was not a miracle of the Holy Prophet (saw) and the disbelievers did not make such a demand. Rather, it was a sign, like any other sign in the universe. This article provides an overview of their arguments.
