The Use of Modern Instruments in Moon Sighting: An Analytical Study of the Opinions of Contemporary Scholars

Abstract

The rules of Islamic law have been revealed until the Day of Judgment, and for every human being, whether they belong to any region, time or place of the world, whether they are less educated or more educated, they are addressed to the Shariat. Many of the rules of Islam are based on the rising of the moon, such as sacrifice and Hajj, Eid al-Fitr and Ramadan; the Eid al-Fitr is four months and ten days after death and the period of menstruation is three months, and one year is fixed for paying Zakat. The determination of four months for fasting and the determination of two months for fasts of expiation, the period in all these matters, is determined by the rise of Bilal. These are the rules of religion and the rules of the world. If there is any other such case, then it is fixed on the moon. Therefore, the problem of seeing the crescent moon is a general problem. Every person needs it, and that is why the evidence in Islam is based on vision, not on technology, so that humans can be saved from suffering. However, if modern tools and resources are also helpful along with visual aids, then their use is permissible in Shariah.
