Strategies for Countering Religious Extremism in Pakistan: An Analysis of Universities’ Role

Abstract

According to the 2017 census, the population of Pakistan is approximately 207 million. Islam is the dominant religion with about 96.47% of the population practicing the faith, while the remaining 3.53% practice various religions including Hinduism, Christianity, Sikhism, and other religions. Religious minorities in Pakistan include but are not limited to Christians, Hindus, Kalash, Parsis and Sikhs, and Ahmadis and others. It is important to note that while Pakistan is predominantly a Muslim country, there are internal divisions within the Muslim community. These divisions include various sub-division of Muslim society and different aspects of jurisprudence or Fiqhi backgrounds. Furthermore, there are ongoing debates about the role of Islam in Pakistani society and politics. In this diverse society religious extremism poses a significant challenge to Pakistan's social cohesion and stability, needing comprehensive strategies to counter its influence. This abstract examines the role of universities in countering religious extremism and proposes strategies to influence their potential in promotion of tolerance, critical thinking, and development of unity among students. This study highlights the importance of promoting merit base hiring of the admin to faculty, critical thinking skills, facilitating interfaith dialogue, integrating religious education with modern subjects, and promoting peaceful conflict resolution within university settings. Additionally, it emphasizes the significance of engaging with civil society, training educators and counselors, conducting research, and promoting youth leadership and civic engagement to effectively address the root causes of extremism. By implementing these strategies, universities can play a pivotal role in shaping a stronger and inclusive society that is resistant to extremist activities.
