Abstract

The roots of Muslim sociological tradition in the studies of Qur’ān and Hadith has been traced out by numerous Islamic scholars and researchers. Quran and Hadith is used as source of Muslim sociological outlook in two ways: Firstly, they invite human beings to ponder over the phenomena around them; and secondly, they give central importance to social world as it is through social world that individual first acquires the basic elements necessary for his intellectual and spiritual growth and then gives expression of his inner experiences only with the help of existing social structures. This dialectic and reflexive relationship between individual and society was promptly captured by the early Muslim thinkers. Shah Waliullah arguably is one of the most important Muslim scholars in the intellectual history of Muslim civilization who has worked on this relationship. The principal attribute of Shah Waliullah’s thought is its logical coherence. His works contain systematic analysis of various aspects of human condition. Shah Waliullah successfully employs various branches of knowledge including history, sociology, and psychology to expound various topics in his encyclopedic works. This study aims to serve as an an introductory endeavour to understand Shah Waliullah and his thought in the context of Muslim Sociological tradition. This paper will provide a brief description of Muslim sociological tradition and will discuss some of the general features of Shah Waliullah’s thoughts and ideas. The paper will also explore the concept of social reconstruction and will provide an overview of Shah Waliullah’s thoughts on the conception.
