AN ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE THE ROLE OF SPOUSES IN THE FORMATION OF A FAMILY

Abstract

A family is considered to be the basic foundation of society. It is the primary institution for developing the core moral values, ethics and norms of society. Islam provides the basic rules and laws for the establishment of a family, based on the mutual rights and duties of husband and wife. In order to maintain a balance and harmony in a family Islam assign certain roles and parameters to both husband and wife. Islam emphasized the importance of the duties and clearly mention both genders their limitations and boundaries. Wives are entrusted with managing the house chores and responsible for the nurturing of their kids, while husbands are responsible for earning and the provider’s for the family. Allah consider man as a Qawwam who is responsible for the maintenance of the family affairs, safety and for the right conduct of family members. Allah created man with certain qualities, abilities and powers, which make them responsible for performing these tasks. Allah also granted man a degree superior to woman to fulfill the responsibility of governing the family. This superiority is not in the sense of ruling, dictatorship or in honor or excellence, but in the sense of responsibilities and duties assigned to man. On the other hand, a righteous woman is demanded to be obedient to her husband, in order to maintain the discipline of the family. Both these governance and obedience is meant to be owning the family responsibilities and it would be the willingly duties for both spouses, not    a burden or enforced obligation.
