Rationalization of Religion in the Context of Modern Science: Limits and Possibilities

Abstract

In the modern era, one of the most important challenge for Islamic thought is to what extent new interpretation of religion can be adopted in the perspective of theology, modernity and scientific method. In Islamic tradition, different theologians have adopted different approaches. Similarly in the modern era, basic principle approaches to respond this challenge may as follows. Without refining and purifying the human mind, rationalization of religious beliefs and commands is alike to make it more materialistic. This is an analtytcal study to explore the rationalization of religion in context of modern science. For this purpose, data is gathered through secondary sources; books, articles and online. No compromise can be made on the basic believes of religion. Such as concept of oneness of God, concept of Prophet hood, the reality of revelation and angels, belief in heavenly books and the concept of life hereafter. A theologian or a preacher by staying within own limits just can rationalize the religious believes according to pre-existing rational concepts of his era. He is not obliged to do more than that, nor is guidance in his hands. The third approach is that Allah has given very slight knowledge to humans and this requires not get confused in irrelevant questions.
